Notice for the Closure of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive in Randburg

This permanent closure will result in vehicles no longer being able to travel directly from Hendrik Verwoerd Drive into Jan Smuts Avenue and vice versa. The road closure will be implemented on 19 February 2007 in order to accommodate construction work to upgrade the section of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive between Selkirk and Jan Smuts Avenues, which is taking place as part of the revitalisation of the Randburg Precinct.

All necessary permissions have been obtained from the relevant authorities in order to implement this closure. The full description of the affected section follows below:

Description of Affected Section for Closure

Hendrik Verwoerd Drive will be closed from the junction with Selkirk Avenue to Jan Smuts Avenue. During the four-month construction period, only limited access to the area will be permitted. The layout of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive will be altered and the urban landscape upgraded along the length of the road from Selkirk Avenue to Jan Smuts Avenue. Access to the library, clinic and all other existing facilities along Hendrik Verwoerd Drive will be maintained, however there will be no accommodation of
through traffic to Jan Smuts Avenue. The “closed” Hendrik Verwoerd Drive will terminate in a cul-de-sac at Jan Smuts Avenue. The upgraded Hendrik Verwoerd drive will accommodate parking
for visitors to the shops and facilities in the area. In order to promote pedestrian movement, public safety and improve the overall ambiance of the area, the upgrade will incorporate pedestrian walkways, greening of the area, public benching and upgraded public lighting.

Date of Closure

The abovementioned section of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive will be closed as from Monday, 19 February 2007, for construction purposes, for approximately 4 months. As from 19 February 2007, no traffic will be permitted to proceed through onto Jan Smuts Avenue. During the construction period, limited access will be provided to the existing facilities along the affected section of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive. Road signs will indicate detours during the construction period. The alternative road is down Pretoria Street or Selkirk Avenue.
