Arbor City Awards 2007 Invitation to Participate Judging Criteria Entry Form

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) in conjunction with the Institute of Environment and Recreational Management (IERM) have reintroduced the Arbor City Award Competition during the year 2002, with the main objective of encouraging municipalities to undertake greening initiatives. The competition was kick-started in Gauteng Province, went on to the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu Natal and now extends to Limpopo Province for 2006.

The aim of the program is to recognise and provide incentives for towns and cities for their greening efforts with a special focus on previously disadvantaged areas. The program is run as a competition and all Local Municipalities are eligible and also invited to enter.

Main objectives of the program:

• To encourage municipalities to undertake greening initiatives.
• Development of greening plans by municipalities.
• Extension of greening projects to previously disadvantaged areas.
• Ensure that municipalities comply with relevant legislation regarding greening e.g. CARA.
• Raise general awareness about the importance and value of greening in residential settlements.
• Provide incentives for Local Authorities that are trying their best to implement greening projects, especially in previously disadvantaged areas.
• Networking and sharing of information (during adjudication).
